Counselling for Educators
For teachers, education assistants, school counsellors, administrators and everyone who works in education, with particular care for Black, Indigenous and racialized educators. Free sessions with Maddy Devitt, a counselling intern supervised by Ruth Unaegbu, RCC-ACS.
What we can work on
- Burnout, exhaustion and compassion fatigue from caring for students all day
- Being the only racialized person on staff, or one of very few
- Racism and microaggressions from colleagues, parents, students or leadership, and the toll of deciding whether to speak up
- The extra load: being expected to lead every equity initiative, support every student of colour, or explain racism to others
- Code-switching, and the cost of always having to seem “professional” enough
- Supporting students through hard things while carrying your own
- Workload, boundaries, and the pressure to always be available
- Career doubts, leaves of absence, returning to work, or deciding whether to stay
How Maddy works
Counselling here is culturally affirming and race-conscious. You do not have to explain or prove your experiences of racism, and we look at the systems you work in, not only at how you cope with them. We focus on what you want: more energy, clearer boundaries, a sense of belonging, or a decision about what comes next.
As a Black woman, Maddy brings lived experience of systems that were not built with people like her in mind. She draws on AEDP, Brainspotting, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and you set the pace.
A space that is yours
- Counselling is confidential. Nothing is shared with your school, district or employer.
- Sessions are online by video, so there is no waiting room where you might see a student’s family.
- Sessions are free, so nothing goes through your benefits plan.
- You do not need a referral, or to go through an employee assistance program.

Common questions
Will my school or district know I am in counselling?
No. What you share is confidential, and we do not contact your employer. The limits to confidentiality, such as a risk to someone’s safety, are explained in your consent form before your first session.
Who counts as an educator?
Anyone who works in education: K to 12 teachers and teachers on call, education assistants, school counsellors, administrators, early childhood educators, post-secondary instructors and staff, and student teachers.
I am not racialized. Can I still work with Maddy?
Yes. Maddy works with all educators. Her focus on racialized educators shapes how she works, but it does not limit who she sees.
What does it cost?
Sessions with Maddy are free until December 2026, because she is completing her practicum. There is nothing to claim on insurance.
Can we meet outside school hours?
Let us know the days and times that work for you when you get in touch, and we will do our best to find a time that fits around your teaching day.
You take care of everyone else. This hour is for you.
Send a short message and we will be in touch about next steps, at your pace.
